Cologne is the oldest major city in Germany. The name Cologne stems from the Roman empress Agrippina. Today, traces of the Romans are still to be found.

The Roman road network is still reflected this very day in the layout of the city streets. The Hohe Strasse, a busy shopping street between the cathedral (Dom) and Neumarkt square, can look back over a two-thousand-year history of economic and social life.

If you like shopping, you’ll probably never get bored in Cologne. The great variety of stores, shops and boutiques are worth visiting even for those who don’t like shopping. The main shopping streets are the Galeria Kaufhof and The Musikhaus Tonger here you’ll find both nostalgic and very modern and well known stores side by side.
The best thing to do is to explore the streets for yourself by strolling down them with your classmates or colleagues that you have met during your study or internship in Cologne.

PARKS AND SIGHTS

When you are in Cologne for your internship, practical work experience or your study, nothing is more relaxing than spending some of your day of in one of the many beautiful parks or gardens of Cologne. 
For each of its total of over one million inhabitants, it has 75 sq.m. of municipal park or garden, even close to the city centre: the Rheingarten in front of the Old Town, Kaiser-Wilhelm-Ring, Theodor-Heuss-Ring, Volksgarten, Blücherpark, Römerpark can be reached by most people in cologne and visitors in just a couple of minutes. All these parks are really worth paying a visit during your stay here in Cologne.
